Ahmedabad: Four killed in wall collapse during demolition drive
Four persons were killed when a 20-foot wall of a building collapsed during a demolition drive by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) here Tuesday. The deaths triggered a protest in the area, dominated by Patidars, following which the civic body ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Some locals rushed to the Gujarat High Court, which was hearing a petition challenging the demolition. They told the court that the government could expand the road – for which the demolition was ordered – without razing the structures. After an urgent hearing, Justice A J Desai asked AMC to maintain status quo till the next hearing on April 21.
The victims’ families initially refused to claim the bodies. They took the bodies home only after the police intervened. Locals have declared a bandh on Wednesday.
“We are inquiring whether there was any negligence. We have videographed the entire demolition process in the presence of police. Prima facie nothing seems to be wrong on the part of authorities,” said Municipal Commissioner D Thara.
