Congress, Left attack government on US pact, call it ‘dangerous’
The Congress and Left parties attacked the Narendra Modi government Wednesday over its decision to sign a logistics pact with the United States, with the Congress saying it was “disastrous” and would hit the independence of India’s foreign policy while the Left parties said it was “dangerous and anti-national”. Defence minister Manohar Parrikar announced Tuesday that India and the US will soon conclude a Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement, reportedly a tweaked version of the Logistics Support Agree-ment that the earlier UPA-2 government was reluctant to sign. This pact will enable both militaries to use each other’s bases for repair of ships and aircraft, refuelling as well as replenishment of supplies.
“The government should retract the decision and not sign this agreement and other foundation agreements,” said former defence minister A.K. Antony.
